It is used less for plotting than for layout: planning at a set scale, blocking out designs, and craft work where one square maps to one real-world unit. ### How many 1 inch squares fit on a page Counts are for portrait orientation. The first column allows a 10 mm margin on all four edges — the practical figure, since most printers cannot print to the edge. The second is the theoretical maximum edge to edge. | Paper size | Sheet | With 10 mm margin | Edge to edge | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | A4 | 210 × 297 mm | 7 × 10 (70) | 8 × 11 (88) | | A5 | 148 × 210 mm | 5 × 7 (35) | 5 × 8 (40) | | US Letter | 215.9 × 279.4 mm | 7 × 10 (70) | 8 × 10 (80) | | 11x17 | 279.4 × 431.8 mm | 10 × 16 (160) | 10 × 17 (170) | | Legal | 215.9 × 355.6 mm | 7 × 13 (91) | 8 × 14 (112) | | A3 | 297 × 420 mm | 10 × 15 (150) | 11 × 16 (176) | | A2 | 420 × 594 mm | 15 × 22 (330) | 16 × 23 (368) | | Poster | 457.2 × 609.6 mm | 17 × 23 (391) | 18 × 24 (432) | | Movie Poster | 685.8 × 1016 mm | 26 × 39 (1,014) | 26 × 40 (1,040) | _1 inch squares per sheet, by paper size._ ### What 1 inch graph paper is used for - Room and furniture layout planning at 1 inch to 1 foot. - Quilt block and cross-stitch design. - Large teaching demonstrations. 1 inch is exactly 25.4 mm. Choose _Actual size_ rather than _Fit to page_, which typically scales to about 96% and would make every square 24.38 mm instead of 25.4 mm. To check, measure ten squares: they should span exactly 254 mm. ### Other spacings [5mm Graph Paper](https://graphpdf.com/5mm-graph-paper/) · [10mm Graph Paper](https://graphpdf.com/10mm-graph-paper/) · [1cm Graph Paper](https://graphpdf.com/1cm-graph-paper/) · [2mm Graph Paper](https://graphpdf.com/2mm-graph-paper/) · [1mm Graph Paper (Millimetre Paper)](https://graphpdf.com/1mm-graph-paper/) · [5 Squares Per Inch Graph Paper](https://graphpdf.com/5-squares-per-inch-graph-paper/) · [8 Squares Per Inch Graph Paper](https://graphpdf.com/8-squares-per-inch-graph-paper/) · [10 Squares Per Inch Graph Paper](https://graphpdf.com/10-squares-per-inch-graph-paper/) · [1/4 Inch Graph Paper (Quad Ruled 4×4)](https://graphpdf.com/quarter-inch-graph-paper/) · [1/2 Inch Graph Paper](https://graphpdf.com/half-inch-graph-paper/) [Full paper size reference](https://graphpdf.com/graph-paper-sizes/) · [All 12 grid types](https://graphpdf.com/graph-paper/) · [FAQ](https://graphpdf.com/faq/)
