Guide
Data plotting requires graph paper that matches the scale and distribution characteristics of your data. Choosing the wrong grid type can obscure trends and lead to incorrect interpretations.
Key facts
Top formats
Coordinate Grid (Cartesian axes): Best for standard data plotting with linear relationships on both axes. The emphasised x and y axes make it easy to read data points and identify trends.
Log-Log Grid (Dual logarithmic scale): Best for data spanning multiple orders of magnitude on both axes, revealing power-law relationships that appear as straight lines.
Semi-Log Grid (Log-linear scale): Best for exponential data where one axis spans multiple orders of magnitude. Converts exponential curves into straight lines for trend analysis.
Where this breaks down
Optimal boundaries
Coordinate paper suits most data plotting tasks where both variables are linear. Switch to semi-log when the dependent variable spans multiple orders of magnitude. Use log-log when both variables span wide ranges. Normal probability paper is specialised for distribution analysis and should not replace standard plotting paper for general data visualisation.
