1/4 inch graph paper has 1/4 inch between adjacent grid lines — quad ruled 4x4, also called 4 squares per inch — the US classroom standard.
Key facts
1/4 inch graph paper, sold as quad ruled 4×4, has four squares to the inch. It is the default grid in United States schools and the most widely used imperial ruling.
Counts are for portrait orientation. The first column allows a 10 mm margin on all four edges — the practical figure, since most printers cannot print to the edge. The second is the theoretical maximum edge to edge.

1/4 inch is exactly 6.35 mm — slightly larger than the 5 mm grid standard elsewhere.

A 1/4 inch grid only measures 1/4 inch if the sheet prints at 100%. Choose Actual size rather than Fit to page, which typically scales to about 96% and would make every square 6.10 mm instead of 6.35 mm. To check, measure ten squares: they should span exactly 63.5 mm.
