1/2 inch graph paper has 1/2 inch between adjacent grid lines — a large imperial grid.
Key facts
1/2 inch graph paper has two squares to the inch, making it the largest grid in routine classroom use in the United States. The generous squares suit early learners and any work that gets written inside the cells.
Counts are for portrait orientation. The first column allows a 10 mm margin on all four edges — the practical figure, since most printers cannot print to the edge. The second is the theoretical maximum edge to edge.
| Paper size | Sheet | With 10 mm margin | Edge to edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | 14 × 21 (294) | 16 × 23 (368) |
| A5 | 148 × 210 mm | 10 × 14 (140) | 11 × 16 (176) |
| US Letter | 215.9 × 279.4 mm | 15 × 20 (300) | 17 × 21 (357) |
| 11x17 | 279.4 × 431.8 mm | 20 × 32 (640) | 21 × 34 (714) |
| Legal | 215.9 × 355.6 mm | 15 × 26 (390) | 17 × 28 (476) |
| A3 | 297 × 420 mm | 21 × 31 (651) | 23 × 33 (759) |
| A2 | 420 × 594 mm | 31 × 45 (1,395) | 33 × 46 (1,518) |

1/2 inch is exactly 12.7 mm, close to but larger than a 1 cm metric grid.
These links open the generator with 1/2 inch spacing already applied. Change the style, size, colour, or margin from there.
A 1/2 inch grid only measures 1/2 inch if the sheet prints at 100%. Choose Actual size rather than Fit to page, which typically scales to about 96% and would make every square 12.19 mm instead of 12.7 mm. To check, measure ten squares: they should span exactly 127 mm.
